High School Plan Update

Pueblo School District 60 has been working diligently to develop a plan to bring high school students back for in-person instruction. As always, the safety of our students and staff has been of the highest importance making this year's schedule planning particularly challenging.

Over the last few weeks, D60 administrators met in focus groups to discuss a wide variety of options and ideas to address scheduling challenges and to improve our delivery of online instruction. This listening tour included representation from each of our high schools and included teachers, union representatives, master schedulers, data entry secretaries, counselors, and administrators. An important outcome of this meeting was the development of an approach to phase students back into the classroom using a three stage model.

Starting this week (September 28), high school online instruction will be adjusted so all students learn synchronously (direct contact with teacher) in the morning, and asynchronously in the evening, on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, that model will flip.

Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Suzanne Morey said that "this adjustment was made because high school teachers thought this would allow them more opportunity to provide small group support and ’office hours' to students when the entire school is working remotely."

Our best hope is for high school in-person students to return to the classroom starting the week of Oct. 19, at the start of the second quarter.

Below is an outline of the three stages

·  Stage 1 (current stage)

o All Instruction for High School Students is provided virtually

o Students will attend Monday and Wednesday 1-4th period synchronously and 5-7th period asynchronous

o Students will attend Tuesday and Thursday periods 1-4 asynchronously and periods 5-7 synchronously

o Teachers will schedule office hours and small group instruction during asynchronous time.

·  Stage 2

o In-person students return to the classroom two days a week and learn online two days a week

o Fully online students continue to work two days a week online synchronously and two days a week asynchronously

o All students begin to follow their Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday hybrid schedule

·  Stage 3

    • In-person students return to school four days a week
    • Fully online students continue to learn virtually
