Graduating classes of 2008 to 2009

Graduation requirements are designed to give each student a well-balanced and comprehensive high school education.  Classes, when carefully selected, will help students explore and develop their own interests and abilities.  In planning a course of study, students should consider the following:

1. All freshmen and sophomores are required to be enrolled in at least six periods per semester.
2. All juniors and seniors are required to enroll in at least five periods per semester (excluding Partial Absence and Teaching Assistants).
3. Before selecting a course, students should read the course description to be sure it fits their needs, interests, and abilities and supports their plans after high school.
4. College entrance requirements and/or vocational plans for the future should be considered in selecting courses.
5. All students are required to be enrolled In a mathematics course and a language arts course each year.

Graduation from a Pueblo City Schools’ high school requires completion of a minimum of twenty-two credits.  All credits must be completed before the student is eligible to participate in the graduation exercises.
Subject Area Credits Requirements/Notes
English 4 units English 9, English 10 and two credits elected from the Language Arts course offerings in grades 11 and 12.
Health .5 unit
Mathematics* 2 units Two credits elected from math course offerings.  Algebra I or higher.
Physical Education 1.5 units Any one and a half credits from physical education course offerings or the J.R.O.T.C. course offerings.  **Participation in athletics and spirit leaders can fulfill the requirement although such participation does not count toward the total graduation credits.
Science* 2 units Two credits chosen from the science course offerings

Social Studies

3 units One credit Civics/World Geography, One credit 10th grade U.S. History, One credit elected from the social studies course offerings.
Electives 9 units
One unit of credit must be from:  Foreign Language, Music, Art, Science and Vocational Education, Business Education, Consumer & Family Studies.
TOTAL 22 Credits

*Subject to Board of Education approval to address Colorado Commission of Higher Education college (CCHE) admission requirements.

Early Graduation for 2008 to 2009

A student may graduate at the end of the junior year or at the end of the first semester of the senior year provided that the student has completed the required 22 Carnegie units of credit effective with the class of 1999 and has met other graduation requirements as established by the Board.
 
Graduation shall be defined as completion of the course requirements and not the participation in commencement ceremonies.
 
Use of the term 'class of' followed by the specific year denotes the year of expected graduation for those students who began as freshmen.

Graduation from a Pueblo City Schools high school requires a completion of a minimum of twenty-four credits.  All prescribed requirements set forth by the State of Colorado Department of Education and Pueblo City Schools Board of Education must be completed prior to the student participating in a graduation exercise.

Graduation requirements are designed to give each student a well-balanced and comprehensive high school education.  Classes, when carefully selected, will help students explore their own interests and develop their abilities.  In planning a course of study, students should consider the following:

*Course offerings shall meet the CCHE course criteria for pre-college requirement(s).

**A waiver of requirement for one-half PE credit may be granted for participation in an entire season of any interscholastic sport included in the district athletic program. The designated one-half credit would then be added to the elective credits.

***A waiver of requirement for one-half Health credit may be granted, by the principal, upon written request by the parent or guardian. the request shall be specific to religious beliefs and/or content contrary to parent or guardian beliefs (refer to Policy IMBB-R(3). The designated one-half credit would then be added to the elective credits.
